Postcards of Kindness

14 Nov

Some time ago I found a fabulous page on Facebook, Postcards of Kindness. It is such an amazing page I really recommend that you have a look: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PostcardsOfKindness

The group was set up so that care homes and residential homes who add themselves to the group could be sent postcards of kindness from members of the public. Admin also encourage hospices or hospitals to include themselves.

There is a spreadsheet of addresses to choose from and you can see who has or hasn’t had a card sent lately. You can also send birthday cards, especially to those who are turning 100! Wow what an achievement.

Imagine during times of Covid being stuck indoors, sometimes with no visitors, and then post arriving from around the country or indeed around the world, for you to read. These in turn can be passed round and be a conversation starter for the residents. There are over 41000 members of this page.

I took a favourite photo of mine of Whitby Abbey and used a company to turn them into postcards. Sometimes a home does post on the page, and you can see it! This does not always happen of course, this is not the purpose. But it’s still nice to see sometimes. Some people include their address and on the odd occasion receive a reply – this of course is not the purpose either but again is nice to receive sometimes too.

I even knitted a toy elephant for a resident – who I didn’t know and have never met – and the joy when I saw a photo of her with it will stay with me forever.

This is a great pastime for anyone but especially for children who are bored during holidays or lockdowns.

Go and have a look, you never know you may end up sending some yourself.
